27-16 Bears Win
Cal reached down deep to get this win. This is a team that has been floundering for years, but is finding ways to win tough games against solid opponents. There’s a lot to like about where this team is headed, and Bears fans can be excited not just about the future, but the 2017 season.
Offense Does Enough
This was not a banner day for the Cal offense, but they took advantage of the opportunities they were given, putting points on the board with short fields and making a crucial, long drive that garnered 7 points to open the third quarter. A blemish on the team’s effort was the work of the field goal kicker, who went 2/4 on field goals.
Defense Makes Big Plays
The three interceptions of the Cal defense were crucial to their victory, including one returned to the Ole Miss 21, one that brought an end to a promising Rebels drive, and a pick-six near the end of regulation that put the game out of reach. Cal also stifled the running game, holding the Rebels to 1.8 yards per carry. For a defense that has struggled to stop anyone in years past, to have a win against an SEC opponent come on the strength of a defensive performance is something to be happy about.
USC comes to Berkeley for a game that many had penciled in as a win for over a year- maybe even permanent marker. Prognosticators are starting to think differently, however, with some persistent problems with USC’s play and a better-than-expected Cal team. Worth keeping an eye on this one.
